Wenn es im Popgeschäft so etwas wie eine schwarze
Liste gäbe, stünde der Name "Donna Summer" ganz oben. Als
die Disco-Queen Anfang der 80er Jahre in einer Stunde geistiger Umnachtung
Aids als "gerechte Strafe Gottes an die Schwulen" proklamierte, schoss
sie sich selbst ins Aus.

Der weltweite DJ-Boykott von Summers Repertoire ist bis
heute ungebrochen. Tragische Geschichte, denn musikalisch hat die Frau
echt was drauf. Donna Adran Gaines, so ihr bürgerlicher Name, ist
nicht nur eine begnadete Sängerin und Entertainerin, sie war auch
(in der Teamarbeit mit den Produzenten Bellotte und Moroder) federführend
als Komponistin von Weltklasse-Songs wie "Last Dance"
oder "On The Radio".
Der Mitschnitt ihres jüngsten Konzertes dokumentiert noch einmal
eindrucksvoll die musikalische Bandbreite von Donna Summer (von Soul über
Disco bis Rock) und macht klar, wie weit sie mit ihrer hochglanzpolierten
Performance ihrer Zeit voraus war. "Live
& More Encore" klingt kein bißchen angestaubt oder
überholt, obwohl die meisten der dargebotenen Songs über
20 Jahre alt sind. Egal, wie man der (Un-)Person Donna
Summer gegenüber steht, ihre Musik ist zeitlos und packend. Sie
hinterließ eine Lücke, die die versammelten Whitneys dieser
Tage nicht zu schließen vermögen. "Live..." ist eins der seltenen
Live-Alben, bei denen man sich wünscht, man wäre beim Konzert
mit dabei gewesen.

Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 001-402-422-1212 (or call Michelle at the Nebraska AIDS Project at 001-402-596-2670, USA-Nebraska, Lincoln) and range from $50 - $1000. ($1000 tickets also gain you admittance to a post concert party.) UPDATE: This show was originally scheduled for April 9 , but has been postponed until September 29 due to a conflict with Celine Dion's schedule. The cd single for I Will Go With You is out in stores now, with the maxi single part 2 to follow on the 20th of this month (July). There are 2 versions of the single currently available in stores, one with 6 tracks and one with 9 tracks. But there is a problem with some of the 9 track cds. Apparently there are some cds that list 9 tracks on the jewel box, but when you play the cd there are only 6 tracks. It seems to be a bad batch that got shipped out, so if you got a 9 track cd that only really has 6 just bring it back to the store where you bought it. Most places will offer you a refund or exchange. (But if you make an exchange - check the replacement copy while you are still in the store to make sure it doesn't have the same problem.)
More numbers - Live
And More Encore slips a few places to #47 on the Billboard
Top 200 Album chart. But don't panic - this is still very good. I understand
that sales have slowed down a bit in the New York area (probably because
the cd was sold out in many stores), but they are picking up everywhere
else in the country. Just to put things in perspective, Live
And More Encore is Donna's highest charting album since Cats
Without Claws (1984) peaked at #40 back in 1984.
